Disability

Coffee County Schools offers disability coverage through Unum, providing income replacement if you're unable to work due to illness or injury.  It's essential to consider how long you could manage your expenses if you couldn't work.

Short Term Disability replaces your income for up to 11 weeks, beginning on the 15th or 31st day of your disability (depending on which plan option you select).  If your disability extends beyond 11 weeks, Long Term Disability begins on the 91st day and continues until you reach Normal Social Security Retirement age, provided you remain disabled.

Premium Information

Important Documents

Disability insurance protects one of your most valuable assets: your ability to earn an income.  Disabling illnesses and injuries are more common than many realize, and if you're out of work for weeks or months, this coverage helps you stay on top of regular expenses.

Your maximum period of payment is based on your age at time of disability.  Please see certificate for details.

Short Term Disability

The Unum Short Term Disability (STD) plan provides 60% of your weekly earnings to a maximum benefit of $1,700 per week for up to 90 days.  You have two STD plan options: a 14-day elimination period or a 30-day elimination period.  The 30-day elimination period option is less expensive than the 14-day elimination period option.

In the event of a disability, you may choose to use your sick leave in addition to the STD benefit to equal 100% of your pre-disability earnings.

Long Term Disability

The Unum Long Term Disability plan provides 60% of your monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $8,000.  The benefit is payable to age 65 or Social Security retirement age should you remain disabled.

Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion

The disability plans include a pre-existing conditions limitation. A pre-existing condition is a medical condition for which you received care during the 3 months preceding your benefits effective date.  Disabilities caused by pre-existing conditions are excluded, but once you have been insured for at least 12 months, the exclusion no longer applies.

Disability Plans are Not Portable

The disability plans cover you while you are an active employee of Coffee County Schools.  You are unable to continue these benefits upon employment separation, termination, or retirement.
